Illamasqua Demonstration and Challenge

Talk/Demostration

Illamasqua are an independent, British makeup brand. It has been getting more and more popular since its launch in November 2008. Their focus is creativity and individuality. All of their brushes are synthetic, making the brand ethical.

Illamasqua Demonstration and Talk
Spob O'Brien, Head of Professional Development at Illamasqua, gave us a talk about how they got to the positions they are in now and about different fashion shows they had been involved in. They focused on the fashion show, Sorapol SS15, where all of the models had deeper skin tones and they recreated the makeup look that was on the models. I really liked how the centre of the models' faces were highlighted because it worked really well with the catwalk lighting. I found the demonstration really interesting as I have never worked on darker skin tones before. Illamasqua makeup artist, Charlotte Gabriella, gave us the makeup demonstration and the end result was beautiful! I learned that if deeper skin tones have dark patches then you should add a red colour to lift and lighten the area and then add the skin coloured foundation on top.

The Illamasqua Challenge

Illamasqua then set us a challenge to develop a makeup concept and makeup look in about 25 minutes. I thought it was fun, but also challenging, that they didn't give us a specific project brief, but instead wanted us to make up our own! We got into groups of three, making one of us the model and the other two the makeup artists.

We came up with a fairytale/ethereal catwalk show. We wanted the makeup to be very fresh, healthy and natural looking. We imagined the models wearing long, flowing dresses and skirt and with their hair pinned up in pretty curls. We wanted the look to be very pretty and girly, and very youthful.

We first perfected the model's skin with some Illamasqua skin base to match the skin colour. We then took a lighter shade under the eyes and at the high points of her face to add some brightness and highlight. We swept a shimmery eye shadow over the lids to give a pretty highlighted effect and we highlighted the face with a light shimmery powder to catch the light. We gave the model bold eyebrows to frame the bare eyes. We didn't add any bronzer because we wanted the cheeks to be pink and soft looking. We then finished off the look with a subtle pink lip.
I am happy with the look, however if I were to do the look again, I would have made the eyebrows softer and maybe more messy looking. I think the eye brows are too harsh and would look better if they were a bit thicker, but with more obvious brush stroke to make them look more feathered out.
